★ NOTE: ★
The latest versions of final products (sounding data, gridded datasets, and
array averages) are now available at the website for the
DYNAMO Legacy Data Project.
General Information:
- These data products were created by objectively analyzing upper-air
soundings and other data sources onto a regular 1-degree, 25-hPa
grid using multiquadric interpolation. The gridded data fields were
then averaged over the Northern Sounding Array (NSA) and the
Southern Sounding Arrays (SSA).
- The Northern Sounding Array (NSA) and the Southern Sounding Array (SSA)
are defined by the following sites:

- Note that the two ships (the Revelle and Mirai) actually moved slightly
over time from their nominal positions indicated above. It was these
nominal positions, however, that were used to define the averaging areas
for the two sounding arrays.
- Vertical info: 25 hPa resolution from 1000 to 50 hPa plus surface
- Temporal info: every 3 hours (00, 03, 06, 09, 12, 15, 18 and 21 UTC)
for 1 Oct. thru 31 Dec. 2011
- These products are available as simple ASCII text files. See one of the
Readme files below for important information regarding data sources, file
formats and references.
- The following array-averaged products are available:
- Basic fields (z, u, v, omega, T, theta, q, rh,
div, and vort).
- Large-scale forcing fields (i.e., advective
tendencies of T and q).
- Q1 and Q2 (i.e., apparent heat source and moisture
sink).
- Moist static energy (MSE) terms (complete form
with g*z in tendency and horizontal advection
terms).
- Moist static energy (MSE) terms (based on
primitive equations with no g*z in tendency or
horizontal advection terms).
- Dry static energy (DSE) terms.
- Budget-derived quantities (rainfall and
<Qr> which
is column integrated net-radiation) along
with surface latent and sensible heat WHOI fluxes
at daily resolution and 3-hourly CERES
<Qr>.
- TRMM 3-hourly rainfall estimates (based on the
3B42v7 product) averaged over various regions.

Upper-air sounding network for DYNAMO/CINDY/AMIE. Polygons show areas over
which gridded analyses were averaged.
Visual sonde inventory of upper-air data for six core sites based on Level 4
data (i.e., 5-hPa interpolated). Each line of dots represents a successful
sounding. Larger missing data gaps at RV Revelle and Mirai are the result of
ship port calls. Analyses are most reliable when ships are on-site.
