Gridded ensemble datasets:
- General info:
- Released: 10 Mar 2015
- Horizontal info: 1 degree lat/lon grids over 15S - 15N, 60E - 90E
- Vertical info: 25 hPa resolution from 1000 to 50 hPa
- Temporal info: every 3 hours (00, 03, 06, 09, 12, 15, 18 and 21 UTC)
for 1 Oct. thru 31 Dec. 2011
- 20 member ensemble plus a 00-member (the unperturbed case). See
the Readme file for the ensemble datasets (below) for more
information.
- There are 2 versions of the gridded ensemble dataset (see below).
Within each version, there are 2 netCDF data files for each
ensemble member:
- Basic fields: pressure, geopotential height,
temperature, water vapor mixing ratio, zonal wind,
meridional wind.
- Derived fields: vertical p-velocity, horizontal divergence,
horizontal vorticity, apparent heating, apparent drying.
- Readme file for the
ensemble datasets.
- PowerPoint summary presentation
for the ensemble datasets.
- Version 3a
- Based on observations only; no supplemental model analysis.
- netCDF Data Files
(directory containing 2 netCDF files for each ensemble member)
- Each netCDF file is approximately 540 MB in size, so we have not
tarred them all together, but recommend using wget to grab them.
- Readme file for
the "normal" (unperturbed) version 3a gridded product.
- Version 3b
- Based on observations supplemented with ECMWF OA.
- netCDF Data Files
(directory containing 2 netCDF files for each ensemble member)
- Each netCDF file is approximately 540 MB in size, so we have not
tarred them all together, but recommend using wget to grab them.
- Readme file for
the "normal" (unperturbed) version 3b gridded product.
Array-averaged ensemble datasets:
- General info:
- Released: 10 Mar 2015
- These data products were created by objectively analyzing upper-air
soundings and other data sources onto a regular 1-degree, 25-hPa
grid using multiquadric interpolation. The gridded data fields were
then averaged over the Northern Sounding Array (NSA) and the
Southern Sounding Arrays (SSA).
- The Northern Sounding Array (NSA) and the Southern Sounding Array
(SSA) are defined by the following sites:
Sounding Array |

- Note that the two ships (the Revelle and Mirai) actually moved
slightly over time from their nominal positions indicated above.
It was these nominal positions, however, that were used to define
the averaging areas for the two sounding arrays.
- Vertical info: 25 hPa resolution from 1000 to 50 hPa plus surface

the Readme file for the ensemble datasets (below) for more
information.
- There are 2 versions of the array-averaged ensemble datasets
(see below). For both regions (NSA and SSA) within each version,
there are 4 compressed simple ASCII text files for each ensemble
member:
- fields.area_member.gz: Basic fields (z, u, v, omega, T,
theta, q, rh, div, and vort)
- lsf.area_member.gz: Large-scale forcing fields (i.e.,
advective tendencies of T and q)
- q1q2.area_member.gz: Q1 and Q2 (i.e., apparent heating and
apparent drying
- eopo.area_member.gz: Budget-derived quantities
